Reminder: I recommend using a color catcher sheet for the first wash. I rinse all yarn until there is zero color but just to be on the safe side, I always recommend it 💕

I’ve been dying and spinning like crazy…. But I think the preorder colors are pretty good 🥰…. I have inspiration pics and as I dye the fiber I’ll update the pic and same thing once the yarn is spun… please keep in mind if you ordered or want to order, they are being done in the order they were received. It takes a day to dye and dry, 8 hours to spin and ply 420 yards of fingering and a day to dry after I wash and finish the yarn. They are turning out really awesome, I hope you’ll 💖 them😊. Sometimes I catch people staring at my hands and wonder… what they must think. I could definitely do without the burns…. ouch do they hurt 😢!

My hair is almost always in a bun from being over a 220* pot of steam. I have to go to my daughters wedding venue on Sunday…. Hopefully my tricks will work to remove the dye.

But I can’t help but love 💕 what I do…. Who wouldn’t want to paint on yarn all day everyday!! The dye mishaps… well they just add some color along the way 🤣!

Well my “Cleared for Take Off” shawl is done and blocked… isn’t she gorgeous! It’s a Cally Monster Knits pattern and I used my new RiverRat Yarn Non-superwash Fingering in Oh Natural as the Main Color and my handspun yarn spun in a fractal fingering weight as the contrasting color.
I can’t wait to wear it in the crisp air of fall! I’m going to try and have a couple kits with hand spun for Pa Sheep and Wool but a variegated I think would look good as well… maybe I’ll cast one on to see, since it was a really fun knit!

I am very excited to announce that we will start carrying something very near and dear to my ❤️ NON-superwash yarn.

Let’s be honest… if you’re like me, you only hand wash your knitwear anyways… after putting all that time in on knitting or crocheting something I’m not trusting my washer or dryer to treat it the same as I would.

I have found some wonderful bases that feel softer than many superwash yarns!

What’s the advantage you ask? Non-superwash is wonderful, it’s got all the magical properties of wool!!!! It keeps you warm while you’re cold, cool when you are hot, it’s moisture wicking, depending on how much lanolin is in it’s water resistant, it is odor resistant, flame resistant, and it keeps its elasticity… MAGIC!

Not that I don’t love superwash… I do, especially when knitting for children or someone you know is going to throw something in the wash before checking for care instructions… but personally my go to for myself leans to non-superwash… it has life, warmth and personality not unlike the animals it comes from.

So if you’ve never tried it or felt it…. Give it a try. You might just fall in love with it! You can always stop by and see us at the PA Sheep and Wool and give ours a squish!

July 10th this year, we lost our granddaughter Catalina Rose and almost our beautiful baby girl, in one fell swoop. I still can’t talk about it. Some days are harder than others, most days I feel helpless. That I can’t take everyone’s pain away, that no one in the medical field could change the trajectory of this tragedy gives me little solace. As I watch her sisters grow I can’t help but wonder…. What she would have been like, who would she have looked like, what would her laughter have sounded like?

I don’t do helpless very well. When my daughter told me October was Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness month, I started thinking. I asked my daughter if I did a special colorway & I could donate $7 a skein to an organization, which one would she choose? She told me of many wonderful ones, but one that resonated most with me was The Tears Foundation. They offer wonderful services like many others, however, the one that draws me in is that they help with funeral services. Sadly there are many that suffer the tragedy of losing a pregnancy or an infant, but every mother should get to take their baby home. No mother should have to leave their child behind because they can not afford a funeral.

I decided to go to the dye pots for a little healing. I came up with Autumn Tranquility. I wanted something bright to represent children, fall to represent October, soothing to represent the peace & tranquility I hope families eventually find. From now until the end of October, $7 of every skein of Autumn Tranquility sold will be donated in November in Catalina Rose’s name to a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Organization. I will dye a new colorway every year to sell during October for proceeds to be donated in November to a Pregnancy & Infant Loss Organization.

I’m calling it a preorder because I may not have a certain base on hand but I will order & dye it as quickly as possible. Thanks for listening & helping me make a difference.

THE STORY BEHIND RIVERRAT YARN

RiverRat Yarn was founded by me, Stacey Rivera. I am an Indie Dyer, Spinner, Weaver and Knitter. I dye small batch yarn and fiber for fiber artists and yarn enthusiasts! I love what I do and hopefully that shows in the quality items I create. The name "RiverRat" comes from my husband a retired Marine who spent 30 years as an infantry marine. "RiverRat" was his call sign, once you hit a certain point you get a mission specific call sign and it seemed sad to let go of something that had been with us for 20 plus years.... so it became my business name. Upon retirement we bought our very first home in beautiful Pennsylvania, where the beauty of the seasons always inspires my creativity. Together we began our next chapter..... RiveraRat Yarn.

Custom Handspun is $.20/ Yard. Choose the weight you would like spun. Choose up to 4 colors, upload inspiration photo or palette card. (You can choose one of the colorways RiverRat Yarn comes in- please keep in mind it will look toally different being handspun.).

*Hand spun goes out in the order in comes in and does take time to dye,, dry, spin, finish and dry again. There is almost always quite an extensive wait time, so please keep that in mind if you have a project deadline. You must choose the weight, color and quantity of yards you are needing. Please keep in mind handspun has so many variables it is like any other fractal yarn, it has a huge variety from skein to skein, even in the same dyelot.
